Sludge
Thickener

The main purpose of the
sludge thickener is to further concentrate sludge. Sludge that is
collected in the primary and secondary clarifiers is pumped up the
sludge-thickening tank, where it is mixed together in a mixing box. The
mixed sludge is then distributed evenly throughout the tank and stirred by
rotating vertical pickets, which allow water to be channeled away from the
sludge and aid in sludge settling. The sludge that settles to the bottom
is scraped by the collection mechanism to a sludge hopper located at the center
of the tank, where it is pumped by the thickened sludge pumps to the primary
digester for further treatment.
