Aeration Tanks

Flow that has been
treated in the primary clarifiers is transported to the aeration tanks. WWMA has a total of six (6) aeration tanks, two parallel sets containing three
tanks each. The aeration tanks contain microorganisms and bacteria that
are used to "feed on" and metabolize the organic material in the wastewater. The three tanks currently in operation have been retrofitted with a fine bubble
diffuser system that constantly provides oxygen to the microorganisms, which is
necessary for the biological breakdown of the organic material. The flow
remains in the aeration tanks for several hours and then is transported to the
final clarifiers, which are used to remove the microorganisms and return them to
the aeration tanks.
